1. Explain What Speech Therapy Is
Talk to your child about what speech therapy is and why they're going. Use simple language like, "You're going to work on sounds and words to help you talk even better."
2. Make It Sound Fun
Let your child know they'll be doing activities like games, storytelling, and fun exercises with their therapist. Emphasize that it's a safe, friendly place where they'll get to play while learning.
3. Visit the Location (If Possible)
If therapy will be in person, consider visiting the clinic or meeting the therapist briefly beforehand to help your child get familiar with the environment. This can help reduce anxiety about a new setting.
4. Encourage Questions
Let your child know it's okay to ask questions and express how they feel. Reassure them that the therapist is there to help and that their questions are important.
5. Practice Some Basics at Home
If possible, practice some sounds or communication exercises at home to give them an idea of what therapy might be like. Keep it light and enjoyable, avoiding any pressure.
6. Plan a Small Reward
A small treat or reward after the session can be a nice incentive and a way to celebrate this new step.
A positive first session can set the tone for success in speech therapy. With a little preparation, your child can feel confident and ready to begin. Schedule a consultation by calling 561.983.1230 or emailing info@novaspeechpathologyrestoration.com.
